A Valid Repair Can Never Be Avoided, Only Delayed

Providing longer lasting wear resistant steel to our primary industry customers for over 41 years, JADCO has seen many different attitudes for dealing with maintenance costs.

A new term tweaked our interest in Idcon’s LinkedIn post, where they discussed the concept of Maintenance Debt.

“…a factor that heavily influences maintenance costs, is your existing ‘maintenance debt’.

IDCON’s definition of maintenance debt is the total cost to repair all equipment in need of repair.

"This equation doesn’t include improvements, only the parts and labor costs required to repair existing equipment problems. It is important to remember the maintenance debt is the sum of all repairs. Remember, a valid maintenance repair job can never be avoided; only delayed.”

AR or Abrasion Resistant steel is used for many wear applications. Frequently there is a much better option to deliver increased equipment life. You can see the volume of sawdust accumulated due to the many leaks in this blow line flat back elbow. Selecting a lower priced wear plate for the elbows, quickly created expensive maintenance migraines.

This installation is an excellent example of how they worked on reducing their maintenance debt.

The weekly cleanup cost for the following photos was $2,000, required by environmental issues. It required 4 men and a vac-truck all day to clean up the sawdust and ejected wood chips every week.

AFTER: The same location three weeks after installing Chromeweld ™ Nb PLUS. Zero bark leaks mean no expensive cleanup. This project which included labor and crane rental, paid for itself in just a few weeks.

The left side of the chart shows ‘Wear Life Units’ based on the wear from A36 mild steel = 1. Most companies never look past AR400 because it delivered longer life than mild steel. As this chart shows, the company selected Chromeweld ™ Nb PLUS to combat their high velocity, fine particle abrasion issues; they were dramatically reduced as shown in the ‘After’ photo.

The entire Chromeweld family of Chrome Carbide Overlay ( CCO ) products is made at our headquarters in Harmony, PA, 30 minutes North of Pittsburgh.

As the leading manufacturer of CCO plate in North America, you can depend on what you get from JADCO. Steel distributors often buy foreign CCO with little carbide content and even less quality materials.
