Chrome Carbide Overlay (CCO) Plates last many times longer than AR400 wear steel. They were designed to combat wear from nearly any sliding abrasive material. However they do not last forever.
If you are a fairly new user of CCO plates in your equipment, you may wonder how you can tell when it is time to replace it, before it fails completely.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTICE WHEN THE WELD BEADS ARE NO LONGER VISIBLE, AS ABOVE AND BELOW THE HOLE IN THE CENTER OF THE CHUTE, INDICATES IT IS TIME TO REPLACE THE CCO WEAR PLATES.
This competitor’s clad plate was no match for the continual focused landing of the abrasive rocks coming down this discharge chute. When the mild steel was exposed, the base plate will wear away rapidly as seen in this photo.
When the base is gone, the chrome carbide is unsupported and falls away. You can clearly see where the impact point and chute bottom are totally gone, now wearing away the equipment structure.
When you see a Chrome Carbide Overlay (CCO) show dark gray instead of the shiny chrome appearance, it means you have worn through into the mild steel base plate. Replace it quickly or you will start to wear through your equipment’s structural steel. It gets substantially more expensive to fix after that point.
Chrome Carbide Overlay cannot be cut with an oxy-fuel torch. It must be cut by plasma, water jet, wire EDM (electrical discharge machining) or air-arc gouging.
To deliver the best products available for the easiest installation, JADCO invested in a 5-axis high definition plasma torch. This 1 minute video shows precise countersunk holes in the exact location for you to install your wear plates. CCO plate is plasma cut from the mild steel side, so the video shows the countersunk hole being cut from the back side.
This eliminates the need for you to try and ‘fix’ new replacement parts from other suppliers before you can install them.
Counter sunk holes created with hand held air arc, are difficult to control; resulting in a poor fit. Having the plate loosen up creates further problems, more unplanned downtime and added expenses.
The real problem with these oversized holes, is the bevel is so wide; they often uncover the mild steel base plate. The mild steel rapidly wears from below, allowing the CCO to fall away when it has no structural support. This is what caused the premature wear and missing plate around the bolt hole in the second photo above.

Our entire Chromeweld family of CCO products is made at our headquarters in Harmony, PA, 30 minutes North of Pittsburgh.
As the leading manufacturer of CCO plate in the USA, you can depend on what you get from JADCO. Many steel distributors buy foreign CCO with little carbide content and far less quality control.
To make certain we control every aspect our Chromeweld overlay plate, JADCO has created our own clad machines.
For the last 40 years we have focused exclusively on delivering consistent, longer life for our customers.
Now you understand why JADCO delivers better results for our customers. We think differently by focusing only on your results.
We will schedule a meeting with one of our local wear plate specialists at a time that best fits your schedule.
Remember, the only thing you have to lose by not working with JADCO, are your profits.
