When you see this type of wear in your ‘wear steel’; it is an instant give away. The steel was not hardened through the thickness of the steel.

Everyone can see the ‘smeared’ wear area showing the steel was not the same hardness through the thickness of the steel.

But do you recognize the bigger problem lurking in plain sight with this part?


Often when someone attempts to Reverse Engineer components, they may not recognize the tiny details that make a huge difference in performance.


The above photo shows what a well-intentioned person requested from a steel fabricator. His drawing was similar to the following hand sketch:

Notice how the square corners in the sketch match the square corners on the first photo?

The fabricator delivered EXACTLY what the customer drawing requested.


The Problem Hiding In Plain Sight, Are The Square Corners.


Square corners are NEVER used in high stress applications on ANY heavy equipment.


SQUARE CORNERS FOCUS ALL VIBRATION STRESSES INTO A CONCENTRATED POINT.


And this is the result.

All the stresses on this trenching machine plate were focused at the 90 degree corner. The result in operation is the plate will crack starting at the square corner.

Although this 1.25” thick steel wear plate is plenty strong, and was securely bolted in place; the vibration stresses from grinding through solid rock caused the plate to fracture.

So What Should You Do Instead?


When you reverse engineer any components, it is critical to pay close attention to any radius on either inside or outside corners. A radius eliminates a stress focal point.


The people who made the plate in the above photo did not recognize the potential disaster waiting to fail at the worst possible time. This plate was the first of many to fail one after another, resulting in continual breakdowns.

Notice heavy equipment plates will have radius corners, rather than the square corner.

This prevents stress concentration sites leading to unplanned failure.

Everyone is looking to get the most for their money. Manufacturers work hard to lower their purchase price to appeal to prospective customers.


Unfortunately, in an effort to lower the initial cost; corners are often cut. Frequently this means your wear components are determined by low bid, not by performance.


Remember there are No Industry Standards for wear resistant steel.

And the dealers are more than happy to sell you standard replacement parts at huge profit margins.


One customer came to us when his bark hog hammers were wearing out after only 4 days! The manufacturer promised the hammers would last 4 months. Yet they were happy to sell him all the replacement hammers he could use.


On paper their new equipment looked like a ‘bargain’. They rapidly discovered it was the most expensive piece of equipment to maintain they owned. As I write this they are planning the replacement of the entire system after just 5 years in operation. They projected it would last at least 20 years.
