Which Wear Plate Should I Use Next?

There are any number of companies selling wear plate and claim they have a great product.


When it is time to improve your results, how do you know which to choose? The last thing you want is having your performance go backwards.


The first thing you need to determine is if your wear is primarily from abrasion or impact.


You can determine this with one simple answer:


Has your wear plate cracked in use before?


If your answer is yes, we have betting odds it was caused by more impact than your steel wear plate could survive.


A metallurgist once told me:


“Anyone can design a wear plate to have high hardness test numbers. When you have a wear plate with high hardness AND it can take impact, is where you separate the pretenders from the professionals.”


Needless to say, the pretenders are quick with excuses or immediately fall back to their low price.

Above you can see JADCO’S formula for 0.75” thick QT Plus ® has 0.99% Nickel content. This allows it to have the same hardness all the way through the steel.

The Thicker The Steel, The More Nickel Is Required To Achieve Through Hardness. Above are the test results for 1” thick QT-Plus ®. Note that the Nickel content is now 1.81%. This allows it to have the same hardness all the way through the steel.

Here is the chemical composition from the test certificate FOR A COMPETITOR'S 1.5" WEAR PLATE, STILL CLAIMING THEIR WEAR PLATE IS THROUGH HARDENED. Notice it lists their Nickel content as 0.06%. By comparison, the 0.75" thick QT-Plus ® has over 16 times more Nickel, and the 1" thick QT-Plus ® has 25 times more Nickel. At 0.06% quantity, there is absolutely no way it is through hardened. It would only be hard on the surface.



Do yourself a favor. Move beyond your usual AR or brand name wear plate performance to QT-Plus ®, and get up to 3 to 5 time the life of commodity (ordinary) AR400. And over double the life of AR450. You will wonder why you waited so long.
